The definition of the Happiness Index originates from the Bhutanese Gross National Happiness Index. In 1972, Bhutan started prioritizing happiness over other factors such as wealth, comfort, and economic growth. Social scientists often recommend that measures of subjective well-being should augment the usual measures of economic prosperity, such as GDP per capita. But how can happiness be measured? Are there reliable comparisons of happiness across time and space that can give us clues regarding what makes people declare themselves "happy"? (Esteban Ortiz-Ospina and Max Roser, 2013)

The happiness index is calculated on seven key factors that most define happiness for a country. These variables are; GDP per capita, Social Support, Healthy Life expectancy, Freedom to make life choices, Generosity, Perceptions of Corruption, and Unexplained happiness.

Now, all these factors lead up to the happiness of people. If you look closely, you’ll realize that most of the indicators are related to how people treat themselves and the people around them. Giving yourself time to learn skills, focusing on jobs, helping a friend, or just taking a vacation goes a long way in helping you live a happier life.

Sonja Lyubomirsky, vice-chair of psychology, at the University of California, has researched for years. She offers some insights. One of them is hedonic happiness, which is how positive one feels moment-to-moment.

To measure this type of happiness, people are asked about the emotions they feel in their daily life. If you’ve been having second thoughts about working out or quitting a bad habit, you need to give yourself time and get on that wagon. This is for the longevity of your lives and your happiness. This also includes a great deal of work-life balance.

Given the fact that we spend a lot of our lives working, work is an essential aspect of our happiness. Not getting the job satisfaction you’ve craved or the appraisal you deserved can be hurtful, to say the least.

What you need to do is get yourself out of your head’s mess and give yourself a break to make fair decisions.
